Simplicity and Zen

Residence Designed by Wen-Jenq Cherng

The Dr. Cherng’s Residence is a perfect example of a designer who rebuilds the living place on his own. The experiences of being a dentist and his life, in this project, have an impact on making this residence full of simple, Zen, and warm atmosphere, a place that reveals a one-of-a-kind aesthetics.

The statement of "the interior design presents the space integration" has become the spirit when planning the configurations, space variations, and storage functions. The vivid colors and lights, and simple style have built up the interior space, the blank infrastructure which is pure, delicate, and modern. In the meantime, the large color wall and a number of antique artifacts have connected the individual items, the design generating the harmonious but unique atmosphere which combines the modern and history.

The indoor public area, a place built for the living room, dining room, and multi-functional space, shows the style of both simplicity and gentility by furnishing with exposed-concrete walls, a purple ceiling, and wooden floor. The design showcases a unique blend of modernity and history, with antique artifacts such as old dining tables and chairs, Buddha sculptures from Tang and Northern Qi Dynasties, classical cupboard sliding doors, and cypress ceiling beams.

Wen-Jenq Cherng, a dentist and designer, learned most of the knowledge of interior design by himself, except when learning fundamental graphic drawing and space design. His particular interest in collecting antique artifacts led to the decoration of the interior space with a number of his collections, creating a brilliant residence.

The Dr. Cherng’s Residence was completed in January 2016 in Taipei, Taiwan, spanning an area of 180 square meters. The design has received recognition and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2017 in the category of Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
